How to get there: CERTH is located between the Thessaloniki city center and the airport, about 12 kilometres out of the city centre. Taxi may be the preferrable means of transport both from the airport (approx. 10 minutes, 15-20 Euro) and the city centre (approx. 25-30 minutes, 25-30 Euro). Where to stay: Look for hotels or accommodations in the heart of Thessaloniki. For instance, look for places near Aristotelous Square, Tsimiski Street, or the seafront for convenient access to attractions, dining, and transportation. As an area Aristotelous square is very central, but you can also look at any other place on the seafront from Eleftherias square (close to the port) up to the White Tower or even further towards the Macedonia Palace Hotel. This whole area is very pleasant and vibrant.
Explore Thessaloniki: Take the opportunity to explore the city’s landmarks, such as the White Tower, the Archaeological Museum, Aristotelous Square, and the Ano Poli (Upper Town) area. Enjoy the local cuisine and vibrant atmosphere.
Details on transportation in Thessaloniki
Coming to CERTH from the city:
- Taxi: The most convenient way to reach the CERTH campus is by taxi. A ride from the Thessaloniki center should cost around 20-25 Euros and last ~25-30 minutes, depending on the exact location of the hotel and current traffic conditions.
- Public Bus: If you prefer to come by bus, you need to take bus No.10 “Charilaou – N.S.Stathmos” toward direction “Charilaou” till its terminal stop (“Termatikos Stathmos Charilaou”), then board bus No.66 “Charilaou-Thermi” and get off at stop “Zoni Kenotomias”, which is opposite the CERTH campus entrance. It should take you approximately 1 hour depending on the exact location of the hotel and traffic. Tickets can be purchased on the bus from automatic machines (you need to have the exact change) or from several kiosks on the street. The 1 trip ticket costs 0.90€ and the 2 trip ticket (within 70 mins) costs 1.10€ . You may find more information on the website of the bus company (OASTH).
Coming to CERTH from the airport: The airport of Thessaloniki is about 14Km from the center. If you are coming to the campus directly from the airport, you will need to take a taxi (duration: ~10mins, price: ~15-20 Euros).
From the airport to the city:
- Taxi: From “MAKEDONIA” airport (SKG) you can easily get to the Thessaloniki city center by taxi (duration: ~25-30 mins, price: ~25-30 Euros, depending on the time of the day and traffic).
- Alternatively, you can take the bus No.01X “Airport – Intercity Bus Terminal”, just 50 meters in front of the arrivals. It should take you about 50 mins to reach the city center by bus (but expect a relatively long waiting time as the buses leave approximately twice per hour). The ticket costs 2 euros.
Transport by taxi
In Thessaloniki you can waive a passing by taxi and if it is available it will stop, or you can pick one up from many locations where they are queuing. In many cases however it is more practical to order taxis online and for this the two most popular services in Thessaloniki are FreeNow and taxiway.
